League 1:

I wrote the following about Wycombe Wanderers back in October, when they travelled to Wigan Athletic.....

Wigan have hit the buffers and are winless in five starts in all competitions, conceding 11 goals and that includes a 2-0 home defeat to Wycombe in the League Cup just 18 days ago. Through the same five games, Wanderers are 3-1-1 scoring 10 goals, losing only to highflying AFC Wimbledon on the road narrowly and in a game they dominated, winning attempt 12-6, corners 7-0, passes 601-289  (accurate 501-199 !) and TIPA's 28-9. XG for the season places them 7th (Wigan 14th) and their current upturn pretty much coincided with the appointment of Michael Duff as head coach a month ago. According to supporters and I know a few, as Wycombe is the nearest Football League team to me, Duff has almost immediately got the team organised and sorted and he has a lot of experience and success at this level. The same goes for Wanderers who have finished 8-6-9-10-5 in their last five seasons in the third tier and they can be expected to rise up the table in the coming weeks, now that results are starting to match performance levels.

Since Duff's arrival, WW have played at 4th-5th placed level losing just 4 of 20 games, perhaps too many draws, but they have won 3 of their last 4 (were the better team by far in the game they did not win in that sequence) and, out of all three cups now, I expect them to continue to kick on. Duff took Barnsley into the L1 playoffs ( lost in the final) in 2022/23, they were similarly placed to Wycombe at this stage, averaging 2.0 ppg subsequently to finish 4th.

Wycombe are the second best second half time in League 1, behind only leaders Cardiff City and that ability to take control after the break, should continue to serve them well down the line. They signed Fulham 20yo AM Luke Harris on loan till the end of this season in this window. He made 36 appearances in Birmingham City's romp to the League 1 title last season and 17 for Oxford United in the Championship in the first half of this campaign and is a very experienced youngster. I understand that two other signings are likely, including Charlton captain Greg Docherty, who has, apparently, fallen out with Nathan Jones (see above) he played 43 games in Athletic's L1 playoff winners last season and would be an amazing signing and we can hope that comes off.

They have 6-7 points to make up on the top 6, but still have 54 to play for and I think that odds of 5.50 are fair and offer a little value and there is some 6.5 around and that, for my stating the obvious comment of the day, is better!

2 units Wycombe Wanderers to finish top 6 @ 5.50+ general quote.

Update:

Wycombe are 10th, currently four points off top 6 pace, one of what looks like seven teams chasing two playoff spots. They have some tough looking fixtures remaining, but Lincoln will have won the title before they meet in the penultimate game and three games are against poor teams, the fixtures with Stockport , Huddersfield and Bradford City will be decisive. Wanderers currently trade at roughly the same odds (5.50-6.50).

Good luck!
